Workshop I: How can algae affect our health?

Algae and cyanobacteria are one of the most important biological components of aquatic ecosystems. They are photosynthetic micro- and macro-organisms that produce oxygen and organic matter, making them the basis of the food chain. They play many positive roles in the aquatic ecosystem, including participating in water self-purification, element circulation, and serving as bioindicators of pollution. However, their excessive growth (blooms) can lead to fish kills and eutrophication.

Algae and cyanobacteria are also not indifferent to humans. Containing numerous substances, ranging from fats and sugars to various minerals and compounds, they have found applications in various industries, such as food, cosmetics, and medicine (including aesthetic medicine), as well as in environmental protection.

During the workshop, we will learn about algae (microalgae) and cyanobacteria characteristic of our fresh waters – we will attempt to identify species ourselves using microscopes. We will also discuss their use by humans, with particular emphasis on their beneficial effects on our health and appearance.

As a curiosity, we will also learn about macroalgae (but more marine ones) and their use by humans.
